Cleveland has a rich hockey history that can be traced back to the 1929 International Hockey League (IHL) franchise the Cleveland Indians. In 1934 the team was renamed the Cleveland Falcons and in 1937 renamed yet again to be called the Cleveland Barons. The Cleveland Barons would remain a part of the American Hockey League (AHL) until 1972 when the new World Hockey Association (WHA) franchise the Cleveland Crusaders came to town. The WHA Cleveland Crusaders played four seasons before being replaced when the National Hockey League (NHL) team the California Golden Seals relocated and brought back the Cleveland Barons name. The NHL Cleveland Barons would play only two seasons before merging with the Minnesota North Stars. Cleveland would go without a professional hockey team until 1992 when the Muskegon Lumberjacks relocated and became the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL. In 2001 the IHL folded, taking the Cleveland Lumberjacks franchise along with it. However, in the following fall of 2001, the American Hockey League's Kentucky Thoroughblades would be purchased and moved to Cleveland, becoming the third team to hold the Cleveland Barons name. The new Barons team was again relocated following the 2005-06 season to Worcester, Massachusetts., once again leaving Cleveland without a professional team. Following a year off, the inactive Utah Grizzlies AHL franchise was purchased and moved to Cleveland, becoming the Lake Erie Monsters and beginning play in the fall of 2007. The Monsters continue to play in downtown Cleveland today. Over the years, hundreds of players have passed through Cleveland with various professional teams. Here we will spotlight just a few of the former Monsters, Barons, Lumberjacks, etc. who have moved on. If you know the whereabouts or activities of a former Cleveland player and would be willing to share, email our webmaster at mischfan@yahoo.com
